The Importance of an Oil Change

Oil being poured through a funnel into an engineYou should get your oil changed primarily as part of your vehicle’s scheduled maintenance plan, but also for its own sake. Having healthy oil is a big step forward against future issues developing down the line. Our service team encourages that you take a proactive role in getting your oil changed rather than just taking a lax approach.

In addition to following the schedule, we believe that manually inspecting your oil once or twice a month is imperative. When you do this inspection, your oil should appear to be a translucent amber color with little to no particles floating around in it. This will help you stay on top of your oil’s health and can be a great indication that something might be going wrong depending on its color.

When You Should Get an Oil Change

Historically, we’d recommend getting an oil change every 3,000 miles, give, or take. However, thanks to the advances in both oil and engine technology, that interval has been significantly extended. Now, we recommend that you get your Land Rover vehicle an oil change somewhere between 7,500 miles and 10,000 miles. Please make sure you refer to your owner’s manual to see where your specific Land Rover vehicle fits in that range.

One thing to keep in mind is, depending on how you use your Land Rover, it can affect the timeline for needing an oil change. Activities that can affect your oil change schedule can range from extensive towing, off-roading, frequent driving over challenging terrain, and more. Again, this is where manually checking your oil will help you in the long run.

When You Don’t Get Your Oil Changed On Time

You’ll immediately notice the first example, as it is when the check oil light becomes illuminated. This generally means that the oil needs to be changed, or there isn’t enough oil in the system for it to be working properly.

The next example involves scents. Your vehicle might produce all sorts of smells, often disagreeable. However, if you notice distinct “oily” odors, it could be followed by plumes of smoke coming up from under the hood.

Then the last example is a little more involved. You’ve by now gotten comfortable with the amount of noise your engine makes when in use, right? Well, pay attention to that noise as if you notice it increasing beyond typical levels, it can mean that the oil in the engine has failed to prevent the scraping of metal parts.
